The garden, as of March 3 2009

Today I started the spring planting – at least I started keeping track of it! I ordered my seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company (www.rareseeds.com). Today, with neighbor Jack’s help, I planted the following for early spring. We were a little late, but put them where they will soon be shaded by the giant elephant ear, so maybe we’ll get some good harvests before it gets too hot. Here’s what we planted:

Five color silverbeet (swiss chard)
European mesclun salad mix
two spinaches – monstruex viroflay and new zealand
two radishes – early scarlet globe and scarlet turnip white tip.

And I may have spotted some carrots I planted a couple of weeks ago popping up. I had just about given up on them!

Cool. It will be neat to be able to track what happens.

I’m sure Jack had fun, since he is 5, and had just managed to get unstuck from up in a tree!
