It’s only fair – Victoria’s Secret Follow-up

Amazing – I got a wonderful response from Victoria’s Secret’s Internet Services & Correspondence Manager! He clearly read my comments, understood and responded to my specific complaints. He apologized, gave me the rest of the credit to my account, and also gave me a generous gift card! Most important, the letter felt sincere and personal, not a random form letter. Of course I’ll give them another chance!

Happy anniversary to us!

Kim Schlossberg Designs is five years old today! I just might (probably) be a little too emotional to properly thank everyone tonight at the celebration, so let me get it out of my system now.

I’ve made it through five years, and have never gone hungry. In fact, these last couple years I’ve had really strong growth. And the only reason this has been possible is because of the help and support of my friends and family.

All of our work comes from referrals. Thank you to all the friends who keep sending me new business.

My print jobs turn out great and my clients are happy because of the hard work of my printers. So, to quote one of my earliest clients: thank you for making me look good.

My web sites are working well, and looking better than I expected, and coming in on time, thanks to the help of a wonderful web developer. Thank you, too, for making me look good.

We can take on any size job without getting overwhelmed because of the talents and extraordinary hard work of my team. Thank you for going the extra hundreds of miles and for caring about our clients as much as I do.

My many designer and artist friends have never been competition, but collaborators. Thank you for the work we do together, and also for your generous help brainstorming designs. And a special thanks to I think every designer I know who contributed to our new logo design.

Thank you to my fellow business owners who shared your experience, strength and hope to help me through so many expected and unexpected “learning experiences.”

Thank you to all my friends from Arthur Andersen who helped me to see there was a light at the end of the tunnel for all of us, and for continuing to make my life better.

Thank you to all my friends from Toastmasters, NAWBO, and the AMA for teaching me to say hello to strangers.

So many of my clients are really working to make this world a better place for all of us. Thank you for letting me contribute in my own little way.

Thank you to Walter for looking over every word I’ve written and every design I sent to a client. For helping with so many web sites. For reviewing every contract and agreement. For writing some very effective letters. And more than that, for giving me support and encouragement to have bigger dreams and to go after them.

And thank you to all of you for your belief in me.

Where is Ernestine when we need her?

AT&T came out to fix Walter’s DSL. The person was very nice, but did not fix the problem. Here is AT&T’s response:

Wasn’t he cold in the interview?

I found this in one of the local “People” papers last week:

“The room where I talked to Wildman (at the time completely bare) would be the TV interview space…”

Join me for coffee?

I love to read everything I can about how artists and business people find their insipiration. This morning I’ve been enjoying a New York Times article, “Composer House Arrest,” by composer Annie Gosfield.

Along with sharing her creative process (it involves a lot of coffee and a little whiskey), she discussed the importance of knowing her clients very well. She says, “For me, the difference in writing for a specific cellist and just writing for cello is enormous.”

That’s how I feel about working with my clients – especially the artists and small business owners. I try to have a personal connection, and get to know their likes, dislikes, personality and dreams. The more I understand them, the more meaningful work I can do for them, and the more enjoyable it is for me. Annie talks a lot of bringing work to life, and that’s what I try to do for all of my clients.

So – most client work starts with chatting over a cup of coffee!

Trixi thinks I might be weird

I’ve been tagged to tell six things weird things about me. Astonishing to think about! You never know how people see you, but here goes.

1. Walter says most people would think I’m weird for never watching TV and not having a TV with a permanent location in my house. I do have a TV, which just might be older than you, and I pull it out every year on Thanskgiving morning when I’m cooking so I can watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I’ll watch more TV when I run out of books to read.

2. I’m difficult at a dinner party. I can’t eat dairy or sugar. If you want to invite Walter, who won’t eat anything that swims, we’re pretty difficult guests. But at least we’ll probably bring a bottle of wine – and maybe a funny comment or two!

3. I really love my work and my clients. Yes, even that one …

4. I’m a fanatic about the English language. And, I’m afraid to say that because surely there’s an error (or two) in here somewhere.

5. People who keep their cars running when they’re sitting still in a partking lot make me crazy! Every time I see one, I want to tell them about our one-in-eight-children in Dallas who has asthma. Turn off the car and open the windows – how hard is that?

6. I really really miss seeing stars in a black sky. Did you notice they went away?

I’ve been tagged by Trixi! Here are the “rules”: each person who gets tagged needs to write a blog post of thir own 6 weird things as well as clearly state this rule. After you state your 6 weird things, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says “you’re tagged” in their comments and tell them to read your blog for information as to what it means.

Apologies in advance to Suzi, Angela, and four more blogger friends to be named later.

even though you didn’t “tag” me, i will respond promptly!

A funny look at the creative process

I loved Moonlight and Magnolias at the Dallas Theater Center!

I think I laughed for two solid hours through the play. It’s the story of three men writing the script for “Gone With The Wind” in five days; the writer had not read the 1000+ page blockbuster. Anyone who’s had to meet a deadline, tried to pull something good and creative out of another artist’s material, worked on a team with members with conflicting goals (art vs. business vs. social statement vs. a good night’s sleep vs. personal glory), or wanted to try their hand at acting can probably laugh along with this story.

If you’ve never been to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kalita Humphrey theater, you’re missing a gem in the middle of Dallas. One that’s worthy of it’s own entry. If you’re unsteady on stairs, sit on the main floor. But if your allergic to peanuts, sit on the balcony.
